Get To Know Film At The Revival House
35mm refers to the width of a film stock used to shoot, print and present motion pictures. 16mm is the preferred size for smaller film projects and was a commercially available ‘home movie’ format. While film print is still in use today, 35mm was the most ubiquitous format for film production until the mid-2010s, when cinema exhibition rapidly converted to digital projection. The Revival House joins film makers, exhibitors and lovers of cinema worldwide in the film projection renaissance and preservation of its legacy as an art form.
The aspect ratio of a projected image on screen is the ratio of its width to its height. ‘Widescreen’ is a common term, referring to an image’s rectangular shape that measures 1.85 as wide to every increment of 1 it is high, resulting in its 1.85:1 aspect ratio. Another common aspect ratio is 2.35:1, or ‘Cinemascope’, which is shot on an anamorphic lens, squeezed into the frame on 35mm film stock and is then projected as a wider, stretched image on screen using an adapter.
Feature film prints are stored on individual reels in sequences of around 20 minutes in length, which means a standard 90 minute film requires around 5 reels. At The Revival House, the projectionist unspools each reel of film, splices them together into one large reel and places ito onto a ‘platter’ device that runs the film directly through one projector. This process doesn’t require changing any reels in sequence between two projectors and can provide one long, continuous loop. The projectionist also prepares for platter projection of a feature presentation by ‘making up’ the film into one large reel, which may include selected ads and trailers before the movie begins.
The audio that accompanies the picture is usually recorded and stored directly onto the film print. The audio can be either an analog sound track (recorded optically), or a digital sound track (recorded magnetically). The most common digital sound tracks for 35mm film prints emerged in the 1990’s and are used today, such as Dolby Digital and SDDS, which are stored on the film prints, and DTS, which is stored on compact discs, synchronised by a timecode track on the film.
